They are old timers - Dictator Bainimarama

Unelected and illegal Fiji Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said people know the Queen is no longer Fiji’s Queen (Head of State) and Sitiveni Rabuka made sure of that.

This follows criticisms leveled against the decision to replace the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on all Fiji’s banknotes and coins with new flora and fauna designs next year.

The man who led Fiji’s first coup in 1987, Sitiveni Rabuka said the move is an attempt to deny an important part of Fiji’s historical identity. He said it is a childish way of trying to forget our historical connections with those that founded this nation.

However, Commodore Bainimarama questions whether people who are criticizing know that the Queen was removed as the Head of State in 1987 by Rabuka. He said we cannot cling on to our colonial past if we want to develop and transform Fiji into the 21st century. Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji does not have the luxuries of former colonies like Australia, NZ and Canada as they have the economy and education system to propel themselves forward.

Burebasaga high chief, Ro Teimumu Kepa said the Queen is still held in the highest regard by the people of Fiji. She said to Pacific Beat that it is disappointing that such changes can be made unilaterally.

Adi Litia Qionibaravi said the royals are still loved by most Fijians, and the decision is met with shock and sadness.
Former opposition leader Mick Beddoes said he is also opposed to the change.

Commodore Bainimarama said these commentators are old timers. He also said these people cannot make changes to propel Fiji forward because they are old timers. The unelected and illegal Prime Minister said Fiji needs young blood to have the guts to bring reforms for the people of the country.
