The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully said he cannot discuss reports that a former member of the Fiji government, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi, is seeking to enter New Zealand.

While being aware of the reports, McCully has told Radio NZ that he is not in a position to discuss any individual case but confirmed that there have been several visa applications from former government members and senior civil servants.

He said each case is dealt with on merit.

McCulley said all he can say is that he is familiar with the case because there has been some public discussion in relation to it.

He said it related to a person who was in the government and therefore there may be some questions around the issue of sanctions.

Last month, New Zealand granted a visa to Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, who is wanted in Fiji for skipping bail after being charged with sedition.

Fiji has already made an extradition application to NZ however the NZ authorities are yet to respond to Fiji's request.
