2006 Fiji coup team of 6 named

Raw Fiji News - 17 May 2011

Military sources have today named the 6 military men who plotted the 2006 coup.

They are:

1. Frank Bainimarama

2. Aziz Mohammed

3. Pita Driti

4. Esala Teleni

5. Roko Ului Mara

6. George Langman

Recent events perpetuated by the falling out of this group of 6 is something that was bound to happen right from the word go.

Our military sources say that Frank’s motive to execute the coup was to save his own skin from facing treason charges stacked against him by the then Australian Fiji Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes and his Fijian group of investigators.

Ului’s motive was to down democratically elected Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase who had just won his second term in office in 2006.  Ului and his Mara family did not like Qarase simply because members of his own family like Epeli Ganilau, Epeli Nailatikau and Koila Mara were not given substantive government appointments during Qarase’s reign. It was Ului’s job to marshal support behind Frank’s coup to provide employment and rekindle some form of power for his own family members.

Aziz, Pita, Teleni and George are all ambitious individuals who saw the planned coup as an enabler for what was to be their turbo-charged military career path. They, like Frank and Ului were peeved with how Qarase was running his government and their plans were further fueled by the support they were getting from key politicians like Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry who narrowly lost the 2006 general election to Qarase’s SDL party.

With the constant You Tube expose` beaming from Nukualofa, one can be easily mistaken to believe that Ului will remote control a planned revolt against Frank and his inner circle from his hiding place in Tonga.

Now it’s a wait and see game.
