Chinese input into Fiji took on a different form today when Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama launched the art of Taiji in the capital Suva, encouraging everyone from civil servants to members of the public to get into the action.

“With the tremendous and generous support of the People’s Republic of China, we’re officially launching the Taiji program. It is a type of martial arts. It can be used in self defence and as a form of meditation or as a sport,” Bainimarama said at the launching at Sukuna Park.

He said the introduction of the program was part of government’s efforts to enforce medical and health preventative measures.

“We (government) also focus on taking preventative measures to be proactive to become a healthy society. Being healthy not only gives us personal well-being and longevity but it also makes us productive members of society.”

Civil servants were given a taste of Taiji from coach Xu Xiangdong who gave them a few lessons on the sport.

The coach will hold classes at Sukuna Park for the general public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2–4pm and 9–11am.
