DPP to drop charges against senior police officers

FBC News - Tuesday, September 14, 2010

The DPP’s office has filed for a nolle prosequi - to drop charges against former Assistant Police Commissioner Berenado Daveta and former Director Special Branch Rusiate Tudravu.

The Suva High Court registry confirmed to FBC News - they received the file from the DPP’s office this morning.

However High Court registry officials say the case is yet to be called in an open court.

The two men were accused of trying to remove former Police Commissioner Commodore Esala Teleni from his position.

Daveta and Tudravu were suspended for three months before being terminated.

They were suspended for insubordination and inciting other police officers to remove Teleni from office.

The DPP’s office says defence lawyers should receive the necessary documents from the registry soon.

FICAC drops case against Daunivalu
September 14, 2010

A former Fiji rugby sevens manager facing abuse of office charges over alleged transactions as a former accounts clerk with Fiji’s Water Supply Department was today discharged by the High Court in Suva.

Fiji’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) brought the charges against Usaia Daunivalu in January last year.

It alleged that Daunivalu wrote off more than $300,000 owed to the water department by gas company CIG Gas Fiji Limited on December 19, 2003 without the approval of the Finance Minister.

FICAC prosecutor Siriwansa told the court today that after the discussions for the pre trial conference, FICAC had decided to drop the case by entering a Nolle Prosequi.

Justice Sitabarampillai Thurairaja ordered Daunivalu discharged and vacated the trial that was scheduled from September 27 to October 1, 2010.
