LEASES $s GO TO ALL: Says Illegal Fiji PM

Fiji Sun News - 5 July 2010

There will be equal distribution of lease money within a landowning unit, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said yesterday.

He said Government was working towards legislation to ensure lease money was distributed evenly among the people.

“This will benefit everyone in the mataqali (landowning unit),” he said.

“This government wants to make

sure no one is distinguished from another in terms of money distribution.”

Commodore Bainimarama said lease money distributions is one of the major causes of disputes in villages and Government planned to put a stop to this.

“This will put a stop to leadership disputes,” he said.

“As we all know, the reason for this is because of money.”

Commodore Bainimarama said the new legaislation would empower people to take on responsibilities in their respective villages.

“Government wants to make changes that will empower people,” he said.

“And this will definitely empower them.”

Commodore Bainimarama said Government would be distributing lease money straight to the people without charging fees or interests.

“Money will go directly to the people and Government will ensure this happens.”

The Prime Minister has also given his assurance that the lease money will be received by all those entitled to it.

Meanwhile, Government had approved a Land Use Decree. Commodore Bainimarama said this law would provide the legal framework for leasing of i taukei and State owned land at market rates.

“The law allows for the establishment of a land bank from which potential investors and farmers can sub-lease or lease land from the State for a lease period up to 99 years.

“It will provide certainty of tenure, improved rental return to the i taukei landowners and to the State.

“It will provide the much needed trajectory to the economy.

It will provide numerous opportunities.”

He said The Native Land Trust Board’s role would be to provide necessary information to the land bank.

  • One thing that Bainimarama and his illegal regime need to understand is that the Taukei Hierachy is very much intact and that not even a dictator can undo that. There is the Liuliu ni Yavusa, the Turaga ni mataqali and so forth and so on. When the lease distribution is done what the Turaga ni mataqali gets far exceeds the members of the mataqali get because these 2 titles have much of the land. The Tui and the Turaga ni mataqali. Some members of the mataqali have no land and thye money they get comes from the love of the ui and the Turaga ni mataqali. I wonder how this illegal regime under Khaiyum will distribute the lease equally to the members of the Yavusa, mataqali etc.
  • Bainimarama and Khaiyum are in for a rude awakening when they try to do this equal distribution of lease money to those who have no land.

Land is owned by the mataqali as a whole and not its leader or Tui only. The Tui has no say in how or what the mataqali land is to be used for. More than 60% of approval must come from the registered mataqali members for any use to be carried out. Get your facts right, please. The itaukei heirachy is not affected in any way and will remain forever. God bless Fiji.
