Police Brutality Witnessed

Appeals court to decide on ex-officer’s fate
Fiji Sun News - - 18 May 2010

The Fiji Court of Appeal is expected to make a decision on an appeal filed by three former police officers convicted in 2008.

Justice Daniel Goundar, Justice Salesi Temo and Justice Sosefo Inoke presided over an appeal filed by lawyer Kini Maraiwai on behalf of Lole Vulaca, Rusiate Koroivusere and Pita Matai.

Vulaca and Koroivusere are serving life sentences for murder convictions while Matai has been released after serving a two year term for accessory after the fact.

Mr Maraiwai said their appeal was against the convictions and was on the grounds that Justice Nazhat Shameem had erred in law while making her decision.

He also said his clients believed in hindsight that they should have testified in court.

However, Justice Goundar told Mr Maraiwai that this was not an issue for the Appeals Court.

Justice Goundar said it was his own clients decision not to testify before the High Court and should not have any bearings on their appeal.

The Court of Appeal is expected to make a decision on the appeal soon

  • These three officers are ruthless..I have witnessed them action on new years day in 2003 when they kick and punch the life out of a serving innocent british soldier infront of their police station..They took his wallet, money , stripped him naked and threw him in the cell..There was blood all over their verandah behind their police station and in the cell..This was done infront of female officers..They all got away with assault on that incident that night.

  • But this time, for the case of Malasebe, the judges should do the honourable thing and throw their appeal in the sewage..So long have they been getting away with these assaults..Throw them in hell..
