PER Extended Yet Again

Fiji’s Public Emergency Regulations have been extended for another 30 days effective May 28,  since being enforced last April.

A government statement said the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau had extended the PER through a gazette.

The PER came into effect on April 10, 2009 following the abrogation of the 2007 Constitution.

It has been extended a month at a time since then.

Eighteen Methodist Church ministers and a high chief are facing trial over charges related to the PER while several other members of the public have been arrested and later released under the document’s provisions relating to civil unrest.
