Dialogue vital with Fiji govt-PNG PM

Fiji Village News - 21 April 2010

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Micheal Somare has told New Zealand media that he has established a good understanding with Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

Sir Michael, who is on a three day visit to New Zealand, said it’s vital that dialogue is maintained with the Fiji Government.

He said this is an advantage of the less formal Melanesian Spearhead Group, which refused to take action against Fiji despite its suspension from the Pacific Islands Forum and the Commonwealth.

Sir Michael said the MSG presented an opportunity to try and bring Fiji back to the fold.

Sir Micheal told the NZ media that people have said the MSG failed but they do not think it failed as at least they kept the dialogue going.

He said he can pick up a phone, talk to Bainimarama tonight if he wants to and Bainimarama can talk to him on the phone.
