"19-year Vatukoula Strikers to be Removed

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, April 09, 2010

All former Vatukoula gold mine workers who have been on strike since 1991 will have to vacate the company quarters they are living in, the Commissioner Western has revealed.

In an exclusive interview with FBC News, the Illegally appointed Commissioner Western Colonel Joeli Cawaki confirmed that the order has been given by the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources.

Cawaki says a Vatukoula Taskforce will be implementing the order soon and they will be holding talks with all striking workers on the 19th of this month to convey the need for them to vacate the quarters.

He says these striking workers should now know that the trade union and the company they had issues with no longer exist.

Cawaki says the striking miners have been listening to poor advice and the government wants to help the current owners of the mine help develop Vatukoula.

However Cawaki says Government will be looking at ways to relocate the miners whose strike has been declared illegal for 19 years."
