Travel Bans Affect Boards

TRAVEL bans imposed on Fiji citizens to destinations overseas have limited the number of people interested in joining corporate organisations, said head of the Justice and Anti-Corruption portfolio, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Speaking at the Corporate Governance workshop held in Suva yesterday, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said it was for this reason that one person could be a member of several corporate boards or that a chairperson could be n more than one board.

"The choice of board members is limited at the moment because of the travel bans in place. There will be greater diversity when the travel ban is lifted," he said.

"Fiji is going through a period of change in laws and ministries, we want people who are willing to bring about positive changes.

"There may be multiplicity of roles played by one person but this is not engaging in cronyism."

Meanwhile, some executives who have not had their contracts extended was due to their "old ways" of dealing with business operations, which raised questions of accountability on their part.
