Methodist Church Heads Asked to Step Down

Fiji Live - March 25, 2010

Church President Reverend Ame Tugaue and his General Secretary Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu have been asked to step down.

This follows an emergency meeting among the church ministers at the church headquarters in Suva yesterday afternoon.

Acting general secretary Reverend Epeli Nawadra said the Government wanted to work with the church in taking Fiji forward and because of that ‘they wanted people who they could work with’.

“It was suggested that we change the leadership of the church and we have asked the President and the General Secretary to step aside.

“The two ministers were also present at the meeting and they have asked that they be given some time,” Rev Nawadra told FijiLive.

“So right now, we are just awaiting their response,” he said.

Another meeting of the church ministers is expected soon.

In a meeting with Government officials Wednesday, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama called on the church leaders to find a fresh approach.
