Frank attempts to head off FNPF panic

By Fiji Democracy Now

Our fearless dictator is shaking in his shoes about the Fiji National Provident Fund. He’s sacked the board he appointed himself, so now he’s trying to blame the staff. But from information in blogs we know what the real problems are. Firstly he knows his own board members (Felix Anthony) hijacked the Natadola project, causing a huge cost blow-out that independent auditors cannot give their stamp of approval. Secondly, Frank knows that his leaky ship of state is kept afloat by raiding the coffers of the FNPF. He already has plans to cuts pensions but he knows that even this may not be enough to prevent the Fund from failing to pay pensions.

STATE KEEPS EYE ON FUND - Sun 18 February 2010

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama is looking into alleged abuse of funds by the Fiji National Provident Fund staff.

Commodore Bainimarama met with the national pension fund board members yesterday. After the meeting, he said one of major problems was abuse of office by staff there. ‘The Government will now try to find a way to solve these problems’, he said.

He said the abuse of funds by staff continued to increase and the Government was concerned.

Commodore Bainimarama said the people of Fiji had watched the practice helplessly over the past five to six years and it was time to put a stop to it.

He said the Government would ensure proper procedures were followed to avoid any corrupt practices by staff. He said they had drafted reforms that the board would implement. ‘These plans will be used for the next two years,’ he said.

He said a range of complaints had been received against the fund and the Government would ensure they were dealt with.
