Pacer No benefit for Fiji: PM

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, January 25, 2010

The PACER Plus Trade Agreement does not benefit Fiji says Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

The Pacer Plus Agreement is a regional trade agreement that is to include Australia and New Zealand.

He made the comments as Fiji threatens to pull out from the Pacer Plus talks.

“Pacer Plus has no foreseeable economic benefit for Fiji. We’ve made that plain and clear. Fiji will…now that we’ve moved away from Pace Plus.”

Bainimarama says Australia and New Zealand should fund their own agreement.

"The Pacific Island countries should let Australia and New Zealand pay for their own agreement and leave the European Development Fund for the Economic Partnership Agreement."

Fiji was excluded from the Pacer Plus meetings last year by the Pacific Islands Forum – following Fiji’s refusal to set election dates according to their timeline.
