By: Fiji Broadcasting Corporation - 18 January 2010.

Former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase goes to trial tomorrow on charges of abuse of office that were filed nearly two years ago.

Qarase was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption in February 2008 and has pleaded not guilty to the five counts of abuse of office brought against him.

It is alleged that in May 2004 Qarase, while Prime Minister, gazetted regulations which gave the Native Land Trust Board the powers to invest any funds held in trust, causing prejudice to the rights of the Fijian Affairs Board.

It is also alleged that Qarase, while being director of the Fiji Development Bank in 1992, allocated shares to companies owned by his family members without declaring his interest and relationship with those companies.

Qarase is represented by former Attorney General Qoriniasi Bale.
