10 police posts to close down

TEN police posts in the Western Division are expected to cease operations this year.

This was confirmed by police West media officer Wame Bautolu who said a team of officers would today commence awareness with the Nacula community in Yasawa regarding their plans.

"This is a cost cutting measure and is also part of the police build-up to creating a crime-free nation by 2012," he said.

The police posts eyed for closure are Tauvegavega and Varoka in Ba, Adams and Shirley Park in Lautoka, Newtown and Nawaicoba in Nadi, Nadovi, Kulukulu and Vunahalu in Sigatoka and Nacula in Yasawa.

Mr Bautolu said they had to pay water, electricity and phone bills for the police posts which were mostly located near mother stations and other police posts.

He could not confirm how much money they would save by closing the posts.

"This does not mean officers lose their jobs. They will be relocated to stations and other posts," he said.

Asked whether this could mean an increase in criminal activities, Mr Bautolu said the identified areas were also places where the police had conducted intense community policing and they were confident of seeing the positive effects of this strategy.

He said they hoped to close the Nacula, Nawaicoba and Vunahalu police posts by the end of this month.
