Budget reduction will spell disaster: Qarase

Budget reduction will spell disaster: Qarase - Friday, April 03, 2009

WE can expect a drastic deterioration in the delivery of health and education services with the 50 per cent reduction of the civil services' operating budget, says Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party leader Laisenia Qarase.
He said there would be a shortage of essential medicine and drugs and the possible closure of some health centres and schools.
"There will be a deterioration in the quality of essential public infrastructure and utilities," Mr Qarase said.
"The flow-on effect on the lives of all citizens of Fiji, particularly the poor, will be disastrous."
Mr Qarase said the regime had its hand on the panic button and did not appear to know what to do and where to start.
He said what was urgently needed "is a realistic, co-ordinated and well thought out rescue plan to take public finance and the economy out of the serious mess that now engulfs our country".
"Part of the rescue plan must include a return to parliamentary democracy later this year," he said.
Mr Qarase said the directive from the PSC would spell disaster for the effective delivery of goods and services normally expected from the Government.
