Qarase considers legal action against PM

Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase says he will take legal action against the interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama for defamatory statements made against him.

Qarase told journalists this afternoon he was called a liar and would consult his lawyer for possible legal action against Bainimarama.

“The interim PM has stated publicly that I’ve been charged with corruption by FICAC (Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption). That is not true; it is not a statement of fact. It is a wrong statement to make.

“He also said I lied to the court in applying for permission to travel to Australia. I will now consult with my lawyers. I believe his statements against me are defamatory,” he said.

He clarified he did not explain to the court the places he would be visiting in Australia since it was irrelevant.

Qarase was invited to four dinner parties organized by SDL supporters.

Funds raised at these dinners were donated to the SDL party coffers.

“It will be used for our legal challenges, we have at least two major cases before the courts and we have more in the coming month,” said Qarase.
