McCully hopes Commonwealth backs Forum - Monday, March 02, 2009

NEW Zealand would like the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to respect Fijis May 1 election deadline set by the Pacific Islands Forum in January.

Fiji faces suspension from the Forum if it fails to submit a date for the general election by May 1.

NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCully, who will be at the London meeting which begins today, told Radio New Zealand he hoped the Commonwealth would support the position taken by the Forum.

"I think it is very desirable in matters that the region has in its grasp, like this, that leadership is respected by both the Commonwealth and the United Nations and thats certainly a point I will be making to ministers," he said.

New Zealand and Papua New Guinea foreign ministers are two of the nine-member Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group.
