Fiji Govt ‘confused’ over political forum

Fiji Govt ‘confused’ over political forum

The interim government is sending out confused signals regarding the agenda of the President’s Political Dialogue Forum, says Fiji’s deposed Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

His party, the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, which has been invited to the second political forum next week will be represented by Qarase and party president Solomoni Naivalu.

Qarase said the party is looking forward to attending the forum but it is unclear whether elections would be on the meetings’ agenda.

“We are getting mixed signals from the interim regime. They are proposing to go ahead with the President’s Political Dialogue Forum and one of the agenda items would be the elections for Fiji as soon as possible.

“On the other hand we have heard statements from the interim government that they are not expecting general elections in the next five to ten years or even beyond. It is a very uncertain situation because of the mixed signals coming out,” Qarase told journalists at a press conference this afternoon
