SDL to appeal against judgment

SDL to appeal against judgment

The Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party will appeal against the High Court judgment that decided against the ousted Government’s case on the illegality of the December 2006 coup.

SDL party leader Laisenia Qarase said the party issued instructions to its lawyers to prepare a case for appeal.

A special SDL management board meeting today expressed disappointment with the ruling.

“We believe that our case submitted to the court was totally ignored,” Qarase told journalists.

“In its place the court went out of its way to justify what the military did on December 5 and the actions taken by the President during the next few weeks.”

While responding to questions, Qarase said while taking the matter up to the International Court of Justice was an option, “it is way down the line”.

“We would have to exhaust the procedure here in Fiji first, that is, by going to the Appeals Court and then to the Supreme Court,” he said.

“If we’re still not happy, then we may have to consider that option, but certainly not at this time,” Qarase said.
