Qarase says, regime is desperate - Friday, October 17, 2008

THE Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party believes the promotion of the People's Charter in secondary schools is a desperate attempt to gain support.
Party leader Laisenia Qarase, in a press conference yesterday, said the interim regime's decision to promote the charter among 18-year-olds in secondary schools was not only shocking but also unethical.
"It is yet another desperate attempt I believe in trying to pressurise people to support the charter. The People's Charter is a political document and a glorified political manifesto," said Mr Qarase.
He said the charter contained political ideologies and the intention was to promote the ideology amongst young people.
He said it was wrong and a violation of basic freedom.
The National Council for Building a Better Fiji, in a statement, said the draft People's Charter was not a political document but it has been politicised by those opposing it.
"An important document like the People's Charter, which will have an impact on the future of Fiji and its people should involve everyone.
"The electoral reform package and other major reform initiatives in the draft People's Charter need to be understood by youths and adults alike because it will affect them one way or the other."
