Qarase hopes talks won’t stall - 29/10/2008

The next few weeks will show whether the interim Government’s initiative to hold political dialogue was a genuine step or not, says Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua leader Laisenia Qarase.Qarase said that some progress was made at last Monday’s meeting between political leaders and the interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. The ousted Prime Minister is hopeful that there will be more meetings to come however he admits that these meetings remain the prerogative of the man who removed him from power 22 months ago.Qarase added that SDL hopes to resolve political problems by dialogue and is hoping that a resolution is reached before the end of the year and an election date set.He declined to comment on whether the SDL will indulge in dialogue concerning electoral reforms.Chairs of the political dialogue forum, Dr Sitiveni Halapua and Robin Nair have been tasked to draft the terms of reference for further meetings.Bainimarama has also proposed to conduct bilateral meetings with individual political parties if required.
