NFP calls on Fiji to reject Charter

The National Federation Party is calling on the people of Fiji to reject the questionnaire distributed by the draft People’s Charter public relations team.In a statement yesterday, party general secretary, Pramod Rae said people should not even touch the questionnaire seeking views from the public about the proposed Charter.“We have noted that the draft Charter was born out of a treasonous act, lacks credibility, is totally illegitimate and that members of the National Council for Building Fiji (NCBBF) have no democratic mandate whatsoever to determine how the people of Fiji should conduct themselves.”The NFP noted at its annual general meeting in Nadi last weekend that the draft Charter "does not offer practicable and long-term solutions to national problems".The party expressed concern over what it suspects is the document’s intention to dismantle traditional institutions, structures and safeguards that people have faith in.“Most seriously, the draft Charter seeks to legislate new electoral reforms and abolish the 46 communal seats of the Fijian, Indian and General elector communities, effectively disenfranchise the people, particularly the Indo-Fijian and minority communities. “This is usurping the Constitution and the guarantees entrenched in it in respect of Communal seats,” the party said.
