Beddoes says regime embarrassing

GOING back on a commitment to Pacific leaders and the international community to hold elections next year is embarrassing, says former opposition leader Mick Beddoes.

Mr Beddoes said by calling off proposed elections the interim Prime Minister has sent out the message that Fiji could not honour its commitments.

Mr Beddoes said it appeared from Dr Fred Sevele's statement Commodore Bainimarama was told about the Forum's unwillingness to accept such a diluting' qualification in the communiqu.

"He had the opportunity then to pull out and not give any undertaking - but he did not," Mr Beddoes said. "In addition the remarks about the possibility of an extended time if genuine efforts were being made by the administration seems reasonable enough to me, yet the administration has continued to waste time and adopt a go slow approach," he said.

"This is very embarrassing. It makes us look stupid when it comes to dealing with the international community because we're saying we cannot honor any commitment or we don't mean what we say."

"And if this is the standard John Samy and his NCBBF are setting as the minimum requirement for good governance and leadership for the charter outcomes, I'm afraid we'll be doomed to a prolong period of aimless wandering."
