A move by an interim Government minister to have his permanent secretary sit in on a municipal council's finance committee meetings has been labelled by a political party as insensitive.
The Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua Party said the move by the interim Minister for Local Government, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi for the inclusion of his permanent secretary, Litia Mawi in the finance committee was political.
Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua's national director Peceli Kinivuwai said Mr Vayeshnoi knew very well the Suva municipality was dominated by the Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua Party and he was trying to get someone in to be the watchdog on behalf of the Fiji Labour Party.
“This is an outright political move and it's so obvious because we have people sitting in the finance committee that are part of the Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua party and Mr Vayeshnoi being part of the Labour party wants someone that would relay information to him sitting in that committee,” Mr Kinivuwai said.
He said the interim minister was breaking the rules and he should not interfere in the municipality's finance committee in the first place.
“That request by Mr Vayeshnoi is clearly not part of the Act and he shouldn't try to play the rule maker and make and break rules stipulated in the Local Government Act,” he said.
He said it was a clear act of insecurity on the party of the interim minister.
