Time running out for GCC taskforce

Time running out for GCC taskforce
26 MAY 2008 -

The taskforce appointed by interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to seek changes to the Great Council of Chiefs does not have much time to complete its work.

However it is confident of support from chiefs in Fiji despite opposition from several provinces.

Taskforce chairman, Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo has confirmed that the planned meeting of the council will still take place in June.

“Even though we are running out of time, we are confident that the council will sit.”

“We are confident that we will get the numbers to convene in June so we are just waiting for chiefs to come forward and decide for themselves if they want to sit in the new council.”

He said even though the majority of the provinces have rejected the new promulgations of the GCC, many are still willing to be part of it.

“As we have seen, it’s mostly the high chiefs and those with political agendas who are trying to sabotage this initiative so this has a negative impact on other chiefs who are interested in the new council.”

“If we want elections next year, we should see that the new council is appointed and convene its meeting otherwise we are the ones who will be blamed if something goes wrong come election time.”

“It’s wise that we take heed of the opportunity that’s before us and move forward.”

Meanwhile, the team will make its presentation to the Lau provincial council this week.
