Heffernan silent on dismissal

The Director of the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity, Angie Heffernan, said she will not comment at this time on the Interim Attorney General's decision to revoke her appointment as a Commissioner of the Legal Aid Commission.

The Interim AG stressed the action was taken in response to a conflict of interest between her role as Director of PCPI and her role with the Legal Aid Commission.

He said the conflict of interest arose late last year when as head of the PCPI Heffernan lobbied AUS Aid to cease funding to the Legal Aid Commission of which she was a Commissioner at the time.

The funds were to be used to help those who cannot afford to hire legal assistance.

Heffernan said she will comment on the issue later today after she writes to the Interim AG in response to the revocation of her appointment.
