NZ travel ban hits scouts

Thursday, December 20, 2007

TEN boys who were to be part of a scout jamboree in Christchurch, New Zealand had to miss out as a result of the travel bans placed on Fiji.

Contingent leader, Ratu Meli Yabakivou told Pacific Radio News the New Zealand High Commission in Suva was frank from the beginning about the children's military connection and applications for visas for the 10 were not lodged.

Ratu Meli said it was unfortunate that the 10 to 13-year-old boys had to pay for their parents or relatives affiliation to the military.

The kids, he said, were looking forward to the get-together but were told not to even bother about applying for visas because it would be declined.
