Silent supporter

Letter to Editor - www.fijitimes.com

ARCHBISHOP Petero Mataca's acceptance to co-chair the Council for the People's Charter confirms for many the often whispered gossip that he has all along been a silent supporter of the coup.

His actions raised more questions of his earlier inaction in not condemning the illegal takeover of a democratically elected government.

As a result his subsequent justifications ring hollow and has reverberated far and wide bringing suspicion on his leadership of the Catholic Church.

It is one thing to want to be part of moving Fiji forward.

I simply invite him to reflect on the fact that had he been vocal and firm in condemning the coup, then coming forward to offer his service as he has done, his integrity and motive would not have been the subject of so much examination and derision.

Then again, as a man of the cloth, reflection, one would have thought, forms a key part of his vocation.

He just has to accept that in this case, his judgement has fallen way short of what one would like to expect from someone of his status.
