Bainimarama banned from Rome?

Thursday, October 04, 2007

REPORTS have surfaced that interim Prime Minister Commander Voreqe Bainimarama has been banned from entering Rome.

Prior to Commander Bainimarama's departure for New York, where he delivered a lengthy speech to the United Nations last week, it was reported he would travel on to Rome, the headquarters of the Multinational Observers Force (MFO).

Radio Australia reported that an Italian government representative had refused to comment on reports on this.

According to the radio report, Commander Bainimarama was told he was barred from entering and was unwelcome.

When contacted, the first secretary of the Italian Embassy in Canberra - which has consular responsibility for Fiji - Roberto Mengoni, would only say ''no comment'', Radio Australia reported.

A spokesman for the interim government in Fiji said he was unaware of this.

Fiji Times Online has sought comments from Pramesh Chand, the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's office.
