Tui Cakau not a GCC member

www.fijitimes.com -Thursday, April 12, 2007

THE Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu did not attend yesterday's Great Council of Chiefs meeting because he is not a member of the Council.

Acting GCC secretary, Joeli Luvu said unlike the Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Temumu Kepa and Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Ratu Naiqama, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove, was not a member.

Mr Luvu said it was a normal GCC meeting and therefore the Tui Cakau was not invited to attend.

Earlier in the day, GCC chairman Ratu Ovini Bokini was quoted as saying Ro Teimumu, Ratu Naiqama and Adi Samanunu Cakobau were not members of the GCC and would not attend the meeting.

Fijian Affairs Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau said chiefs had to be nominated by their province or the minister to be a member of the Council.

''Membership is not automatic,'' Ratu Epeli said, referring to Ratu Naiqama's status as the paramount chief of Cakaudrove.

Attempts to get a comment from Ratu Naiqama were unsuccessful.
