Just hours after Commodore Bainimarama's announcement that the GCC is now suspended until further notice, a statement has been released by the secretariat of the GCC.

It said that after the chiefly meeting, the council agreed that former Chief Executive of the Fijian Affairs Board, Adi Litia Qionibaravi be appointed Secretary of the GCC.

It is also said in the statement that the council noted the absence of the President, the Prime Minister and Minister for Fijian Affairs but was advised by the Chairman, Ratu Ovini Bokini that apologies were received from the President and the Minister for Fijian Affairs.

The council felt that if their absences were related to the decision the council took regarding the Vice President, then it wished it to be known that its decision was made in furtherance of its decision taken at its meeting last December.
