Chiefs reject President's nominee - Wednesday April 11, 2007

President Ratu Josefa Iloilo

Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs has rejected the nominee of President Ratu Josefa Iloilo for the position of Vice President following its deliberations this afternoon.

Fijian Affairs Board Permanent Secretary Ratu Meli Bainimarama confirmed a short while ago that chiefs from two of the three confederacies - Kubuna and Burebasaga did not agree to Ratu Epeli Nailatikau’s name.

The Tovata confederacy endorsed Ratu Epeli for VP.

President Ratu Josefa Iloilo nominated the former Speaker of Parliament and diplomat for the post which was vacated by Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi after the December 2006 coup. Ratu Joni had resigned.

Ratu Meli said the President has been advised of the GCC's decision.

He said the President will have to nominate another person and the GCC will convene at another date specifically to discuss the matter.

However, the chiefs will meet again tomorrow to discuss other issues.
