Army Lying Again About Foster

Army lying, says Qarase - Friday, January 26, 2007

OUSTED Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has accused the military of lying about its involvement in the escape of international conman, Peter Foster to Vanuatu.

He said the military was well aware of Foster's reputation and yet chose to collaborate with him in trying to bring the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party into disrepute. "The military should not try and back out now because the people of Fiji all know that they engaged Foster's help on particular occasions,"he said. "They are lying once again by denying any involvement in Foster's latest ruse,"said Mr Qarase, from his Mavana Village in Lau.

Foster is believed to have escaped on board the vessel MV Retriever 1 to Vanuatu early this month and claims some members of the Fiji military helped him escape.

The military strongly denied claims that Foster was under military supervision when he escaped, saying "it's Foster's word against ours".

Foster fled Fiji on January 5 and is alleged to have arrived in Vanuatu on January 8 before he was arrested on January 14 by Vanuatu authorities.

He was under house arrest in Fiji for fraud-related charges.

Meanwhile, Mr Qarase believes the country should be ready to go to the polls in six months, which is ample time to prepare for an election.
